To put a belt buckle on a belt, open the snaps on the end of a snap belt, slide off the old buckle, loop the belt end through the bar on the back of the new buckle, and close the snaps. Then thread the belt through your belt loops and push the hook on the back of the buckle through a belt hole. You need a snap belt, usually 1.5 inches wide, to change a belt buckle.
A decorative belt buckle can change your whole look in seconds, but only if you know how to attach it. This guide shows how to put a belt buckle on a belt, how to change and replace a buckle, what kind of belt you need, how to wear a western belt buckle, and how to keep it clean.
How Do Belt Buckles Work?
A western belt buckle works with two parts on its back: a bar and a hook. The bar is a fixed loop that holds the snap end of the belt. The hook, sometimes called a stud or prong, pushes through one of the holes on the other end of the belt to hold it closed. A belt keeper (a small loop on the belt) holds the loose tail of the belt in place.
What You Need
- A belt buckle with a bar and hook on the back. Belt buckles from The Bold Bow Tie measure 3.5 by 2.5 inches.
- A snap belt (also called an interchangeable belt) about 1.5 inches wide. The Bold Bow Tie's belt buckles fit snap belts from 1.5 inches (38 mm) to 1.57 inches (40 mm) wide.
- Nothing else. No tools are needed for a snap belt.
How to Put a Belt Buckle on a Belt: 5 Steps
- Find the snaps. Look at the end of the belt that does not have holes. A snap belt has one, two or three snaps a few inches from that end.
- Open the snaps. Pull the snaps apart gently. If the belt already has a buckle, slide the old buckle off.
- Thread the belt through the buckle's bar. Hold the buckle face down. Slide the snap end of the belt through the bar on the back of the buckle, with the smooth, finished side of the leather facing out.
- Close the snaps. Fold the belt end back over the bar and press each snap closed until it clicks. Tug the buckle to make sure it is secure.
- Put the belt on. Thread the belt through your pant loops, starting on your left side, and push the hook on the back of the buckle through the belt hole that fits best. Tuck the tail through the belt keeper.
That's it. Once you know how, changing a belt buckle takes less than a minute.
How to Change or Replace a Belt Buckle
To change a belt buckle, open the snaps, slide the old buckle off the belt, slide the new buckle onto the same end, and close the snaps. Some belts use small screws, called Chicago screws, instead of snaps. For those belts, unscrew the screw with a coin or small screwdriver, swap the buckle, and screw it back in.
How to Put a Belt Buckle on a Belt Without Snaps
A belt without snaps or screws has a sewn or riveted buckle, so the buckle cannot be removed without cutting or unstitching the leather. You have two options:
- Buy a snap belt. This is the easiest and best-looking option. A plain 1.5-inch leather snap belt in black or brown works with every western belt buckle.
- Have a leather shop convert the belt. A leather or shoe repair shop can remove the stitching and add snaps or Chicago screws.
What Kind of Belt Do You Need for a Belt Buckle?
You need a 1.5-inch snap belt for most western belt buckles. Look for these features:
- Width: 1.5 inches (38 mm) is the standard width for western buckles and jeans.
- Snaps or screws: Make sure the buckle end opens.
- Material: Full-grain leather lasts longest and looks better with age.
- Color: Brown belts look best with brown boots. Black belts look best with black boots.
- Size: Many belt makers suggest a belt about 2 inches larger than your pant waist size. Check the belt maker's size chart before you buy.
How to Wear a Western Belt Buckle
Wear a western belt buckle centered on your waist, lined up with your shirt buttons and the zipper of your pants. Tuck in your shirt, at least in the front, so the belt buckle shows.
How Men Wear a Belt Buckle
- Wear a western belt buckle with jeans, a tucked button-down or snap shirt, and boots.
- Match your belt leather to your boots.
- Let the buckle be the statement piece. Pair a bold buckle with a simple shirt.
- For a western wedding or formal event, add a matching bolo tie and belt buckle.
How Women Wear a Belt Buckle
- Wear a belt buckle with high-rise jeans and a tucked tee or blouse.
- Belt a dress or long cardigan at the natural waist for a western look.
- Choose turquoise, floral or stone belt buckles for a softer look.
Where to Wear a Western Belt Buckle
Western belt buckles fit rodeos, country concerts, line dancing, western and barn weddings, date nights and everyday wear with jeans.
How to Clean a Belt Buckle
Clean a belt buckle by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. For dirt or fingerprints, use a cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry the buckle right away.
- Do not soak the belt buckle or put it in a dishwasher.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads and silver dip, which can damage plated finishes and stones.
- Keep stones like turquoise away from water and lotions.
- Store your belt buckle in a soft pouch so it does not scratch.
